Some of my favorite co-teachers are the non-human animals that we cross paths with on the trails, in our neighborhoods, and sometimes even in our homes. I find the experience of witnessing these various forms of life to be magical and memorable, and more importantly, a time when talking about honor and reverence seems to come easy to everyone. Nothing quiets down a group of elementary school kids quite like making eye contact with an owl, holding onto the moment and our breaths, without a sound, knowing that it will fly away all too soon. In a completely literal and non-metaphorical sense, I recognize non-human animals as some of our earliest and most ancient teachers.
This is a post dedicate to some of these kin and the moments I got to share with them.
